Join the club!

Support the school careers of the Rhotia Valley children

Join the Club! – sponsoring 40 orphans of Rhotia Valley Children’s Home in Tanzania. Funding for their school education dropped, as a result of the worldwide corona crisis. Your financial support is most welcome via the website GoFundMe.

‘Rhotia Valley’ is an initiative of the Dutch family doctors Marise and Joris Koch, in the village of Rhotia (Northern Tanzania), near the famous Ngorongoro crater. Rhotia Valley Children’s Home provides shelter, education and professional training for orphans, also providing work and income for the local population.

This crowdfunding initiative is hosted by the GoFundMe website up to March 1st 2021. Its goal is: to raise a contribution to an amount of € 21,000, so that school fees and costs for learning materials can be covered in 2021.

Why this fund-raising initiative at this moment?
For nearly fifteen years now, the children’s home costs have been partly paid for by the revenues from Rhotia Valley Tented Lodge, with this ‘holiday village’ on the one hill and the children’s home on the other. Although they are physically separated, they are actually very connected: the children have a safe home, thanks to benefits from tourism. But tourists almost stopped visiting, since February 2020, because of the corona pandemic.

How will the Rhotia Valley project solve this problem?
In various ways. This initiative is one of these. The project also receives support from the Dutch Rhotia Valley Children’s Home Foundation. This foundation just raised some extra funds and will also use part of its financial reserves to cover the costs for 2021.

Of great importance for the future is that Rhotia Valley is much more than the combination of an orphan’s home and a tented lodge for tourists now. The economic and financial base has been broadened in recent years in many ways: with a flourishing, sustainable farm (vegetables, cows, pigs, chickens), its own drinking water source, a shop, a bakery, investments in solar energy, etc. Rhotia Valley now provides work to approximately 80 residents from the immediate vicinity: a structural and indispensable strengthening of the local economy.

What percentage of my donation will benefit the education of the children?
Almost 100% can be spent on education through the Rhotia Valley Children’s Home Foundation. The only costs of this initiative are those for using the crowd funding website Gofundme to transfer the donations: 2.9% transaction costs + 25 cents per transfer. Those who want to avoid these costs can also donate directly to the foundation, via number NL16 RABO 0129 4320 08 (SWIFT / BIC Code: RABONL2U). Please state your email address. The foundation has an ANBI status; donations are tax deductible.
